“Fam fatale”: A celebration of 1920’s fashion and style

Team 4 Great Gatsby

We’re pleased to reveal another theme from this year’s fashion exhibition… “fam fatale”! This particular showcase promotes Oxfam, whose international work on women’s rights has inspired the students to host a Great Gatsby themed exhibition, tipping their Trilby hats to  celebrate 1920’s fashion and style.

A celebration of creativity and culture

IMG_5015

The countdown is on to our annual charity fashion exhibition: a celebration of creativity and culture! Our first years are working hard on their creative ideas…

IMG_5021

Last week, the students presented their ideas as part of a formal business pitch and we really enjoyed seeing some of their initial ideas brought to life in the form of mood boards, posters and videos – well done everyone!

Student groups were each assigned a charity (Cancer Research, Chest Heart and Stroke, CLAN, Oxfam, Stella’ Voice, PDSA, Save the Children, Shelter, Sue Ryder Care and Barnardo’s) and given £10 to spend on a garment from the charity’s local branch; they were then asked to choose a cultural artefact and this – combined with the garment and their charity’s mission – would form the basis of their creative showcase!

We’re looking forward to sharing some of these ideas over the next few weeks in the run up to the exhibition’s launch on the 12th of April! We’ve seen a real variety of themes so far, from cult classic TV shows to Hollywood blockbusters and novels! Can you guess (from the garments above) what some of these themes might be…?

For the second year running, one of our students is doing her placement in New York! Third Year BA (Hons) Fashion Management student Nikola is making the most of her time in the Big Apple by attending some of the shows for New York Fashion Week.

We love this shot from the Mister Triple X show – and what a venue!

Fashion exhibition project launch

img_37562

Today we launched our annual fashion exhibition with first year Fashion Management, Event Management and Public Relations students! Students were split into ten teams and given ten pounds to be spent in an allocated Aberdeen-based charity shop.  The project will run for the next ten weeks where students will plan and organise a fashion exhibition to be held on Wednesday the 12th of April.

In celebration of our newly formed School of Creative and Cultural Business, the students have been asked to choose a cultural artefact and this will form the inspiration behind their exhibition space. We’re so excited to see what the different teams come up with!

More on this to follow where we look forward to sharing the students’ garment choices and plans for the exhibition…

Week 3 #myfashionplacement

It’s been a busy week for our third years with lots of placement updates!

Lucie is on a year long placement with Cosmopolitan magazine in Prague! A few months ago, Cosmopolitan started helping Rosa charity, which helps abused women and their children overcome problems. Last week, Lucie and the fashion team went to Fashion Arena Outlet to pick out clothes for the children. This initiative has been so successful that Cosmopolitan are planning to hit the interior decor stores next to provide bed linen and pillows. We think this is a fantastic initiative and look forward to hearing more!

After all their hard work we hope our students will enjoy a relaxing weekend. We were pleased to see that Mollie and Beth have been making the most of their time in London, enjoying these fabulous cocktails in Selfridges!

Happy Friday!

Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all our fashionable followers! We hope you’ve had a lovely festive season. As we look forward to welcoming our students back later this month, we’re remembering some of the highlights of 2015 – most of which involve Aberdeen Business School’s fiftieth anniversary celebrations! Our students have presented some interesting takes on what has been a truly memorable golden anniversary year, including themed photoshoots, videos, events and our annual fashion management magazine!

We look forward to seeing what 2016 has in store…

We Love Fashion

IMG_0109

We had a fantastic time at last night’s Love Fashion event; organised by Trend and Premiere Productions. This is a new and unique event celebrating fashion from the North East of Scotland.

We were inspired by festive party wear and winter outerwear in this timely event. Once again we were wowed by the fabulous designs of Atelier Daniel Crozier and there was some fantastic local entertainment including singers and dancers!

Thanks to our students who were helping behind the scenes and whose efforts were described as “outstanding” by the organisers. Looking forward to what is set to become an annual event!

A project-based approach to teaching

Fiona Poster JPEG

We had a great time at last week’s ABS50 Research Conference where we heard some interesting presentations and keynotes. Our Fashion Place contribution was two posters showcasing examples of a project-based approach to teaching. This year’s Magazine Project and Fashion Exhibition celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Aberdeen Business School so it seemed very fitting that these should be included in the conference! Well done to all the students who made these projects a success!
