MSc International Fashion Business

The Masters in International Fashion Business at Robert Gordon University was launched in September 2011. The course is designed for graduates from a creative background who are looking to gain the necessary business experience for a successful career in the fashion industry, and those with a more general business background and who are looking to specialise.

Course content includes: fashion business; fashion identity and communication; public relations theory and practice; Fashion internationalisation and distribution; fashion buying, forecasting and merchandising; research methods; and dissertation.

Here’s some inspiration from our graduates:

Sara Teske graduated with distinction in Fashion Management in December 2012 and since then has been working for the Bernhard Willhelm brand in Paris. Bernhard Willhelm is a German fashion designer renowned for his love of mixing absurdity with high fashion. Sara has an extremely busy and diverse job. Her duties include wholesale, events management, communication, sample management, collection archive management, and general office management.

She admits that it:“sounds a lot but since we are a small company, in the end I help with everything. [My] studies at Robert Gordon University [provided me with the] knowledge so that I can handle it. I hope this year’s students will also be as happy as I am with the MSc Fashion Management course in Aberdeen. In October I will go with the whole Bernhard Willhelm team for a year to Los Angeles. Sounds exciting but still a lot needs to be prepared!”

Robin Reid, a former design student, who graduated in 2012 outlines her experience below:

“In my final year at Gray’s School of Art, studying 3 Dimensional Design, I was faced with the huge decision over what to do next. Upon researching various options, I decided the MSc Fashion Management course stood out as a means for combining my creativity, with acquiring fashion industry knowledge and skills. Throughout the course I’ve been able to use my design skills in, for example, the creation of storyboards and presentations. The application of management to fashion allowed me to research fashion companies that I am personally interested in.

The course has increased my skills in more ways than I could have imagined; including presentation skills, teamwork, report writing, market research, consumer behaviour, marketing, PR, research, management, visual merchandising, financial forecasting, time management, and communication. Most of all, the course has increased my self confidence through helping me achieve greater understanding and knowledge of the fashion business.  The transition from working individually to group work presented new challenges whilst opening my eyes towards accepting the strengths of others towards working together to achieve success. I was most surprised at my enjoyment of coursework pieces on PR and consumer behaviour.

Throughout the year, my tutors were extremely helpful and responsive to any questions or queries I had. They’ve always been patient despite my initial worries about the transition from a design to a management course. I would encourage any student who wishes to learn more about fashion or management to take the course. Anyone who is willing to work hard will definitely succeed and have a great sense of achievement at the end of it.

As an art student I feared that my skills were slightly limiting in terms of career progression.  This course has shown me that creativity can be taken into many different and versatile avenues.”
